At the highest level every company needs to do the same things:
Make something people want to buy.
Find those people and sell to them.
Support the making and the selling with
The right people in the right seats.
Tracking the money.
Making information available easily.
Setting goals and plans that support strategy for growth.
Simple. But not easy. Why? Making shoes is different from making legal documents. And selling shoes online is different from selling them in a physical retail store. Just like fried chicken is different from chicken salad - and I've still never seen a chicken with fingers even though I've eaten them.
If you run a company you need to know both the art and the science of how companies work. That means knowing the concepts that apply all the time to every business and how to adapt them to the specifics of your people, your customers, and your goals. It's hard.
As an entrepreneur for over 40 years and a business coach for 25, I’ve seen a lot of different situations and the common solutions. The most common problems I've seen are:
A business owner who works from the bottom up
They know how the chicken is made. They know the nuances of their people. And they have their hands in everything. But they often can't get out of the weeds long enough to make their bigger vision a reality. They don't have the time to work ON the business because they’re working IN it. They know a lot about the art of running their company. But find the science of business ownership too theoretical. And they can't get out of the weeds long enough to think or even take a vacation!
A business buyer or ETA who works from the top down
They see the big picture and the vision. They know the numbers. But (especially if they've never run a company or worked in their industry) they don't know the nuances of what makes it work. They're steeped in the science but not the art of customizing general business concepts. They get frustrated when their people don't "get it".
For 25 years I've been a business coach working one on one with CEOs and company owners to help them apply the general principles (the science) to their situations (the art). But coaching is very much focused on the art of running a company. Then I wrote a book about it. Check out OUTPUT THINKING. But a book is obviously just about the concepts, the science. The reader is on their own to apply them. I was looking for a way to merge the concepts with the application.
That's The Reason for The Operator Accelerator
I've joined forces with Chase Murdock and his team at Durable to bring together the art and science of running a company. It's designed for people who run companies with 1 to 15 million in revenue: people who have a big enough organization to accomplish a lot but still have control over the details. We want to help operators like that speed up their ability to learn AND apply the truths of how to run their company better. The Accelerator combines the art and the science.
A 6-month program with content and application.
In 13 modules we help you sharpen every critical function of your business.
Each module covers one topic and a hands-on tool for applying that concept to your company.
Delivered in live workshops with a cohort of up to 20 business owners.
